在最近幾年，細胞激素受器的研究已經超越細胞激素本身，主要是因為她們扮演重要的角色以及缺乏細胞激素受器會造成某些免疫缺陷，另外因為細胞激素的pleiotropy （基因多效性）、redundancy(基因重複性)，藉由細胞激素受器會比較有實用價值
